Up into the high country

Up into the high country

with the crunch of gravel

as we leave the sealed

road and the forest grows

wetter and ferns appear;

greeted by the creaking

of cockatoos and wire

fences with 1080: Poison

signs and a landscape

sketched with snow.

(Julian O’Dea)

notes:

cockatoos are large Australian parrots
1080 is a poison that kills foxes and wild dogs
