I Love the Narrow Lanes

I love the narrow lanes
for homing civil servants
and schoolchildren
that perform humble
work like veins,
after the arteries
of roads and freeways
are left behind to roar
all day with the voice
of cars.

And the faithful
waiting trees along
the lane ways
some days
like Roman columns
to be passed in triumph,
other evenings like
keening dryads
weeping in sympathy,
but most days like
solid friends to greet,
nodding in the breeze.

I can just see Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin reading this at home in later life, nodding their heads in full agreement.
