How many waves?

REDRAFT on 21/11/17

How many waves to wash
away a nation’s guilt, striking
a smiling, forgetful shore?
How long to efface a shame?
How can we work this
out alone?

There is no word coming,
no voice from
the windy coast,
no graven answer eroded
out of rock, no message
on a stone.

A reference to the differing waves of feminism perhaps, or maybe the different forms of communism encapsulated within the many, ostensibly divergent, “isms” that plague our current cultural milieu?

Not really. I was thinking of continental Australia. And maybe the shame of black conquest. Or environmental damage. Or even our recent approval of “gay marriage.”

I forgot you’re in Australia. As an American, I reflexively assumed your concerns and my concerns were identical. A bit elitist of me wasn’t it?

A little more self reflection on my part may be in order.

Don’t worry. I wasn’t the least bit offended. It is nice to get any kind of thoughtful reaction.
