As if to settle a question …

As if to settle a question,

the sun breaks through

the cloud and sets the tree

alight, a torch of yellow leaves

like a burning bush,

an utterance from God.

I saw a documentary on the Lost Ark and the presenter went to Mt. Sinai. At the foot of the mountain there is a monastery and the monk claimed that the bush that Moses saw burn is still there. That would be something to see.

I don’t write many religious poems. I got a complaint about this one. Sex and religion are both dangerous topics for poetry it seems.

Solomon got away with it, but he had a reputation for wisdom.

Sex, Religion, and Sex+Religion, are all dangerous topics.

The complaint I got about the above poem was from someone who objected to the mention of God.

Here is a published poem of mine, which does actually combine religion and sex:

        DOUBTING ADAM

        After a sleep
        like death,
        Adam found
        Eve risen from
        the tomb
        of his body …
        … doubting,
        he put his hand
        into her wound,
        and believed.

I like it, but there is always someone out there that doesn’t want to be reminded that grass is green and the sky is blue.
