Giving Western men ideas …

I suppose this is an attempt to normalise and sexualise Islamic dress, but it might have unintended effects.17757243_766405383537353_4401683670094700028_n

Stimulating the imagination is the strongest attractant.

I suppose what I was getting at is that Western men might start thinking that their women would look better like that. More covered up in every way. Pendulums swing.

      • It’s long been fetishised, of course.

Yes. And this seems to be perilously close to fetishising. Or that other thing, orientalism.

I can’t be sure, but this girl looks like she is really a Westerner, and I doubt real Muslim women wear quite this kind of makeup (although I did know one young woman who wore quite a lot of makeup as well as her hijab – two forms of mask, arguably.)

I have known two Catholic women who “cover up” all the time, at home. That is, wear a head-covering. The claim is that Christian women did it first, and Muslim women followed suit.

      • Recent articles/columns about fashion do indicate that more coverage is in, most hilariously by the WaPo, claiming that it was a reaction to President Trump.

Maybe. And how do liberal women protest against President Trump? By undressing; by wearing facsimiles of vulvas on their heads; and by wearing submissive Islamic dress … they seem confused … and to be sending mixed messages.

” … they seem confused … and to be sending mixed messages.”

        They’re women. They’re rarely logical.

  2. Yes, Muslim women often use quite a lot of eye-makeup – for those who make up at all, glam is big. Features are larger, hair/eyes are darker – the extra makeup really works.

  3. My daughters work for a fabric shop frequented by wealthy Arabs who come to “The Mayo” for care….suffice it to say that beneath the hijab, they are dressed to the nines. Or so they say, as I of course was not in the room.

So in regards to this post:

That particular trend isn’t new. Women in the fashion industry and porn have been getting Brazilian waxes since the late 1980’s or early 1990’s.

Thanks for the information. I find the effect rather startling and revealing, as I wrote.

(I have now set the relevant post to private.)
