From the Sea

From the Sea

As my eyes close
or the sun goes down,
I still see you always
breasting the waves,
young and brown
and joyous …

but now I feel restless
at this seaside place;
still; but not content
in my days; I’d blame
this spot, but I know
it’s everywhere
the same …

so I smile as I recall
your saying that you
were a woman and
“smooth and round
like a dolphin”: men
are proud killer apes
but women come
from the sea.
