Nineteen Sixty-Four

NINETEEN SIXTY-FOUR

The horse still pulled
the milk truck in
Sixty-Four:
huge and solemn,
at least to a boy;
bringing the noise
of the world
in rattling crates
even to leafy streets;
with heavy hints
of a far wider world
of daily work, and
rough creatures and
forces, to be feared
and mastered.
