The Open Road

Between the hospital and

the road I thought was there

was the gum forest I could

see from the window of our

ward; seeming deep, with

failed trails leading only

some way in; and beyond,

the faint sound of endless

traffic; but truly the strip

of forest was as thin as a

grip on earth and life, and

I was near the open road.

I’ve been meaning to ask for some time….what drew you to poetry and when did this happen?

About five years ago, about the time I retired. A friend told me he had got a few poems published in a fairly good anthology and I was inspired to try my hand.

I have had a reasonable number published lately.
