As Barry Goldwater wrote, a choice not an echo. And William F Buckley Jr made the same statement by running in the New York mayoral campaign in 1965 as a real conservative.
It is important to offer the populace a real choice on the issues, including a choice on social issues. Trump is doing this in America. And Tony Abbott was doing the same in Australia, until the more conservative party dumped him as its leader and replaced him with a social liberal (Malcolm Turnbull.)
In yesterday’s election, the Australian electorate punished the conservative party by (apparently) re-electing them with a much reduced majority. And also they must now ally themselves with ultra-conservatives.
For a strong social conservative like me this is looking like a sweet result.
Gay “marriage” is looking less likely in Australia. The progressives may have been dealt a real blow.
