Women on Australian banknotes

We have had women on Australian banknotes for a long time. Some I have never heard of, but others are of some interest. This is Dame Mary Gilmore, poetess etc. etc. I have always thought she was a striking-looking woman and quite attractive. Here she is on the 10 dollar note (the other side has AB “Banjo” Paterson, who wrote many iconic Australian ballads.)


She had a fairly serious relationship with Henry Lawson, probably one of Australia’s best known prose writers. Here is another picture of her:


I think she looks quite nice there. But she was a woman of the left, and I have to say that like many progressive women, she did not age well in terms of appearance.

I find that a play has been staged on her love affair with Henry Lawson. Here is a still from a performance:
