A Chinese-Australian man and his bride

William Yang is an Australian of Chinese descent. I have a small amount of Chinese blood myself. Many Chinese men came to Australia in the 19th Century, often to the goldfields.

The photo below is of his aunt as a bride and her older, wealthy husband. My wife and I wanted a wedding photo in this traditional style, with the man sitting and the woman standing. The photographer wanted to know if we were serious. We were. Unfortunately those photos did not turn out well.

An excerpt from the film, Blood Links by William Yang is here.

[Later] In this photograph a modern Australian couple recreate this style in Victorian clothes. The wife here is part-Chinese (Cantonese).

Chinese immigrants in places like Australia used to be called “Celestials” which I find rather charming.
