A BMW advertisement from 2008 for used cars. Background here.

Well, yes, I would care. About the girl at least.

Why men should marry virgins.

Automobiles tend to be much more reliable than women, so there really is no comparison. Now if this were a rent-a-car ad and the comparison were to prostitutes, that would make much more sense, but they didn’t do that.

  2. Men who are into virgins have either never been with one or must have “equipment” stunted so much as to ensure their defloration proceeds less painfully than it otherwise would. Though I guess marrying a virgin would give one plenty of time in which to “forge a passage” one way or another.

I am not quite sure what point you are making. It is not a question of being “into virgins”. It is a matter of wanting to marry a virgin, which until very recently was the natural expectation of men in general.

Yes, in my experience, defloration can be painful for the woman, but as you imply, the process can be extended over time with a bride. In any case, it seems better for both husband and wife if the experience should be theirs.

      • I guess my point is an extension of yours: don’t “be with” a virgin unless you fully expect to marry or have married her. As far as actually marrying one, and being one, you’d both likely have to be very young these days, arguably unfortunately.

I don’t disagree with your main point. But I would just say this. I was at university in around 1980. The sexual revolution was in place. And yet I knew plenty of young women who were clearly still virgins. More religious, more conservative, more intelligent, more fastidious girls often are.

Within living memory, most brides were virgins. It is a bad deal for most men that these days they are not. Some men sample numerous women (and may still settle down with a virgin.) Most men get the leavings.

    • Equipment issues? According to the guys who measure these things, much less than 1% of men fit into that category. The real reasons men desire to marry a virgin, or near-virgin, are that they really don’t want the baggage of STDs (CDC data indicates most promiscuous Americans have or have had one) and the memories of past relationships.

  3. Reminds me of this story I saw today:

Inside an oligarch’s multi-million-pound wedding: Performances from J Lo, Sting and Enrique Iglesias, a £18,000 haute couture gown and fleet of Rolls-Royces as Kazakh billionaire gets married

a jaw-droppingly lavish affair, rumoured to have cost up to $1 billion.

“[the bride was] chosen after a lengthy search for a woman to fit ‘all the strict demands, to be beautiful, a virgin, shy and not public’”

I won’t care about the mileage … if she’s a rental. Terrible ad for all involved when you think about it.

In younger days I didn’t reflect much on it, but I’ve come to the conclusion that virginity is to be strongly preferred for marriage; indeed, partly through your article, my good O’Dea.
