Australia Day 2016

Australia Day 2016

Yesterday the native birds
circled the trees
as they have done for aeons
when the lightning comes.

The bucketing hail flung
in the face of summer
was like retribution
for some aboriginal sin.

But it is calm today
and the stringybark leaves
are greyer than the sky.

Congrats to our cousins across the wide Pacific. Was very moved today when someone posted the video of General Campbell and his ” You Will Not Make Australia Home” speech. Firmly believe that the Aussies best days are still to come.

I don’t know that speech. I must look it up.

I don’t know how we will go. We have done well out of the Chinese mineral boom but that may be slowing.

Socially we are basically fairly coherent but there are attempts to sow division.

The poem refers to the effect on Aboriginal society of the arrival of the white man. I think I was trying to imply that despite past injustices life has to go on.
