Penis Envy – Is It Real?

I used not to believe in “penis envy”. But I have done enough reading in the Manosphere to realise that some women really have struggled with it, by their own account. And its existence would certainly help explain some of the downright peculiar behaviour of feminists and why their outrage is never assuaged.

A feminist considers the issue:

[I am not sure what is meant to be going on in the picture just above. Maybe the girl in the foreground is meant to be urinating in the standing position. I have seen women pee standing up, and they tend to lean forward like that for some reason.]

There is a great line in one of Camille Paglia’s books about her discussing Pat Benatar’s appearance with a homosexual man friend: something like:

CP: Has Pat Benatar had plastic surgery on her face?
HMF: Does Pat Benatar have a face?

  3. The crotch grabbing for women, though, is aping masturbation, whereas for men it is kind of a power display. Men don’t masturbate that way (as we know), but women very much do — those poses by women are simply aping pornographic masturbation, I think, and display rather than being a case of penis envy. It doesn’t scream power, it screams pornographic masturbatory sexuality.

    • Very likely. However the target article relates it to penis envy.

      • True but I think it’s a misdirection in that article, or really just to stir the pot.

      • Whatever it is, it is unbelievably crude. I remember Suzi Quatro joking on stage about her mother saying, “Dear, do you have to stand with your legs apart like a man on stage?” At least Suzi never grabbed her crotch like these performers.

      • Oh it’s tasteless and crude without doubt. It isn’t edifying, but it is sexualizing. I see it as part and parcel of the whole schtick — these women are dressing like whores and acting like porn stars. And it’s idolized. That’s where the culture is at currently.

      • Actually I side with Julian when it comes to the psychology behind Rhianna’s affinity for crotch grabbing on-stage. I mean, considering the lyrics of her songs.

        “That I, I, I, I’m so hard
Ah yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m so hard
        That I, I, I, I’m so hard
Ah yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m so hard
        That I, I, I, I’m so hard
Ah yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m so hard
So hard, so hard, so hard, so hard”

      • LOL! BF makes a good case, but I think more than penis envy it is banal, demonic crap, like most of what passes for entertainment in this age.

    • Er, yes. Maybe they think it will turn on guys, or girls, or … I don’t know … not my generation.

There was a time, years back, when nearly every woman in Penthouse was shown as if she were masturbating. I read a complaint about it from a reader.

      • LOL, whatever you say.

I collect vintage men’s magazines (for the pulp scifi short-stories) and I noticed a lot of the pin-ups involve women primping themselves, or performing some-form of domestic task. Like a young woman sitting at a vanity brushing her hair while wearing a seductive robe, or a leaning over an ironing board.

I’m not sure if those-sort of pinups still exist in men’s magazines (I know the scifi short-stories sure don’t).

      • I don’t think so. Men’s magazines will print whatever the law and social mores allow at the time. What you describe is “cheesecake” and it is still available. But it pops up on Facebook. I doubt that there are too many magazines in the developed world that relatively innocent any more. Modern men’s magazines usually show the woman basically nude, at least inside the magazine itself. It is a long time since I looked at one, but I am thinking of magazines like FHM and Ralph.

On the other hand, such magazines only exist because more mainstream newspapers and magazines will no longer print cheesecake and nudes, because of feminist influence in part. So all the naked ladies have migrated to the more laddish of the men’s magazines.

Women’s magazines, even upscale ones like Nova in its day, used to print some fairly raunchy material, some of which would not pass muster today. For example, a woman in her bikini underwear being inspected by a circle of Islamic men in headdresses and sunglasses: “Undies To be Sold In”. That kind of thing.

Penthouse went gynaecological, and I imagine so did Hustler, leaving Playboy with the more “tasteful” nudes. I don’t know how such magazines are going now, since they must face huge competition from the Internet. I don’t buy anything in that line these days. I never did much. When I did I used to buy the British magazines. The girls looked more real, I found the way they were depicted more amusing; although I couldn’t get over a suspicion, common to Australians, that the girls could have done with a good shower.

Despite what people claim, certain depictions are surprisingly rare. You mentioned women ironing. I cannot remember seeing a depiction of a naked woman doing ironing in a porn magazine. The women you mentioned shown ironing were probably doing that so their bosom could be seen peeking out as they bent over the ironing board. Also rare in most mainstream porn are depictions of violence, although I remember that Penthouse did a montage playing with bondage themes. The funniest layout I ever saw was in Playboy I think: The Women of Mensa. Naked girls with 160 IQs.

  7. If you haven’t noticed, I’m absolutely clueless when it comes to the preferences of Western men. When I was single I just never paid any attention to non-Japanese guys.

I’m not sure if Western men are genuinely attracted to aggressive displays of sexual behavior, or if women merely think Western men are attracted to aggressive displays of sexual behavior.

    • Men are sexually/visually drawn to women who are scantily clad and rubbing their privates, yes. That is what one sees in porn, as Julian as pointed out. Men do not generally (some exceptions) want to marry such women, but they are sexually drawn to them. So, Gaga and Rihanna and the rest are just trying to sell things by drawing eyes. They also draw female eyes, too, but typically not for sexuality in itself, but rathe for the derivative excitement of vicariously identifying with the sexpot as she drives men crazy. There was an interesting article in the NYT about this a couple of years ago where a couple of sexologists were explaining that this vicarious identification with the sexpot being able to drive men crazy was quite compelling for a significant number of women (at least in this culture), as they placed themselves in that role vicariously, and became aroused by it (female arousal being reactive to male arousal in many cases). Lots of women commenters heaped hate on the story (it was also the one that showed that women, when hooked up to arousal measuring machines, were aroused to pretty much the same degree by images and videos of straight sex, gay male sex, naked men, naked women, and animal sex), which makes me think it’s quite true and rather a bit too close to the mark for women in this culture. Japan is of course a very different culture.

      • Possibly I am not typical, but I have always disliked that trope of women masturbating. Nor am I excited by women kissing. Which, perhaps revealingly, is another thing female performers do. While I agree that the women are doing this stuff to excite men, part of its appeal to men surely rests on its drawing attention to the absence of a phallus, which the man is happy to supply in his imagination. So, in a sense it is about absent penises. Girls kissing is felt to be doubly cute because there is no penis present, and maybe men imagine a threesome, another trope that has no appeal for me, but huge appeal as fantasy for many men.

What ordinary porn used to do was reveal the naked female crotch, and address primal male curiosity as to what these mysterious creatures had underneath their pretty skirts. I imagine it was and is attractive simply because it underscores the femaleness and receptivity of the woman as a feasible sexual target.

      • So, Gaga and Rihanna and the rest are just trying to sell things by drawing eyes. They also draw female eyes, too, but typically not for sexuality in itself, but rather for the derivative excitement of vicariously identifying with the sexpot as she drives men crazy.

Wait….WHAT? Western men think Gaga and Rihanna’s antics are sexy ?

I mean, Gaga recently posed on a magazine cover wearing a strap-on.

I realize men naturally appreciate women’s bodies, being visual creatures and all – but the idolization of sexually aggressive females merely strikes me as another example of the push towards androgyny.

      • Of course, and that is also based on porn.

I am not sure quite where to put this. I think there is a better place, but this is relevant to some of the above discussion:

I always found “dominant” women totally unappealing. It would be like having sex with another guy.

  8. I am atypical to some extent. I prefer women depicted in a submissive way. The girl being sold turned me on. You have to realise we are talking about a magazine printed in about 1970.

So, no I don’t like women depicted in a “feisty” way. Which probably helps explain why I preferred the women in the British magazines. I suspect, looking back, that they were more European looking, and not the long-haired blonde giantesses of Playboy.

    • Well, I’ve been wondering lately if the aggressive sexual behavior of Western women, is preferred by Western men, in general. I mean, if Western men consider crotch grabbing sexy, perhaps that is why women mime such ridiculous things?

      Reply

      • I think women are in an “arms race” for the most attractive men. Also plenty of men don’t mind aggression in women they only want to have sex with. “Sure, Sweetheart, you be yourself. Aggressively wear next to nothing. Assertively play with yourself. Be feisty and lie down there. That’s right. No-one tells you what to do, Baby!”

      • My husband’s reaction when I asked him if he likes aggressive sexual overtures: we can have sex after you make me a cup of coffee.

I think women are in an “arms race” for the most attractive men.

That’s another thing I don’t get – the modern Western definition of “attractive men”. They sound like the sort-of men who’d be classified as losers in 1950’s terms.

      • There are various theories. And I should be careful not to be too definitive about a scene I am remote from in several ways. But my theory is that the status of men has declined, men are told to be sensitive, and only thuggish “cads” and “losers” are left looking exciting and masculine.

It really is only a few years since the rule of men and husbands was supported by mainstream social mores. I think it still is to some degree, but the consensus is not as strong.

I wouldn’t be surprised if real penis envy had not increased too. When I was a young bloke, the average girl would have accepted and enjoyed her womanhood. But now she is told that being a girl is a lousy lot, and she should struggle against her feminine limitations.

  9. I wanted to add that this post had its genesis in the fact that at least three female identities in the Manosphere have revealed their own penis envy.

    Reply

      • BF, if you really want to know, email me and I will give you the names. By three, I mean three women who have actually referred more-or-less explicitly to having to cope with penis envy. The number of feminists and other women who show signs of penis envy in their attitudes is, of course, legion.

      • Why do I suspect they are saying it for attention? People make every stupid thing into a “struggle”. Step one: remove head from arse.

      • Lena, of the three cases I can recall, one was a woman complaining that she felt intellectually limited by having a woman’s mind. I tried to cheer her up by saying, truthfully, that most men cannot understand high-level physics and mathematics and so on either. She replied that it had not made her “penis envy” better. The second woman referred to having to accept her female physique and inability to produce an erection (I thought that ticked the box for penis envy). The third, recent, woman said that she had had an attack of penis envy as a girl and had had to come to accept her inferior status as a woman.

      • I find that weird.

It may be that a lot of it comes from projecting our own desires for what we want in a man onto what men want in a woman. We try to be what we want in a man rather than what men want in a woman and the prevailing culture encourages and promotes this idea.

        inability to produce an erection

I can produce an erection, just not my own. 😉 (What a bizarre statement though).

      • It may be a body image issue. There is probably a module in the brain that tells a woman she is a woman and what to expect in terms of her body shape and integrity. Maybe it is more fluid in some women.

Men who claim to be “women in men’s bodies” often report the feeling that their penis is unwanted and alien. Perhaps they feel what women normally would feel.

      • It may be a body image issue. There is probably a module in the brain that tells a woman she is a woman and what to expect in terms of her body shape and integrity. Maybe it is more fluid in some women.

Perhaps they suffer from Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia? I beleive said illness was linked to Gender Identity Disorder. Recently I read a fascinating article that mentioned CAH (concerning the ridiculousness of gender neutral toys). The girls who suffered from CAH would reject dolls in favor of toy trucks and other stereotypical boy toys.

I agree with Lena, what a bizarre train-of-thought. I never wanted to be a man or have a penis. To be honest before this post I never ever THOUGHT about it! I guess I always just enjoyed being a girl.

      • I imagine it could be a lot of fun.

      • That’s just it – I don’t think being a guy would be fun at all! No offense to your gender, but men aren’t exactly the paragons of “fun” – at least not the sort-of fun I enjoy. I mean, guys aren’t into jewelry, cute shoes or “Just Dance” you know, that Wii Dance game where you wave your hands around.

My husband is all serious and lost in deep thought and focused on work. In general, men are like that. I’m not sure if guys can be lighthearted. Typical guy hobbies are either competitive (sports) or constructive tasks (woodworking).

      • We can be funny and have fun. Men do a lot of gaming of course, although computer games bore me.

And yes, like your husband, I spend a lot of time thinking. But I enjoy that.

I have always been very pleased and proud to be a man. But I can see that being a woman would have its good side too.

One of the hardest things about being a man is probably the constant sexual tension. I had assumed that by my age it would have largely gone away. But no. I was just speculating a few minutes ago that maybe a micro-stroke (are there such things?) had ablated some part of my brain, because I seem to be becoming more aggro as I get older.

      • Doesn’t estrogen production decrease with age? (men produce estrogen too, so I assume it applies to men as well)

Perhaps you are just feeling the effects of your natural testosterone, not being inhibited to estrogen?

  10. Those ‘transgendered’ people are just fucking freaks, in a way that even queers and dykes aren’t; the latter may be mixed up about which sex they want to connect their equipment to, but they know what equipment they have, and identify with their sex in at least some fashion; while the tranny types aren’t happy with the body God gave them…

    Jan Morris (born James):

“We are told that the social gap between the sexes is narrowing, but I can only report that having, in the second half of the 20th century, experienced life in both roles, there seems to me no aspect of existence, no moment of the day, no contact, no arrangement, no response, which is not different for men and for women. The very tone of voice in which I was now addressed, the very posture of the person next in the queue, the very feel in the air, constantly emphasized my change of status.

And if others’ responses shifted, so did my own. The more I was treated as a woman, the more woman I became. I adapted willy-nilly. If I was assumed to be incompetent at reversing cars, or opening bottles, oddly incompetent I found myself. If a case was thought too heavy for me, inexplicably I found it so myself.”

    &

“A neurotic condition common among women is called penis envy, its victims supposing that there is inherent to the very fact of the male organs some potent energy of the spirit. There is something to this fancy. It is not merely the loss of androgens that has made me more retiring, more ready to be led, more passive: the removal of the organs themselves has contributed, for there was to the presence of the penis something positive and stimulating. My body then was made to push and initiate, it is now made to yield and accept, and the outside change has had its inner consequences.”
